Deans', Chancellor's, and Steck Awards
Dean’s Awards are granted to 50 undergraduates who have completed an outstanding senior thesis or project during the current academic year.   Each recipient will receive a $100 cash award, and will be considered for a Chancellor’s and Steck Award. Winners will be honored at the Student Achievement Awards ceremony on June 5. The names of the winners will also be announced at graduation.

Scholarships


David L. Boren (NSEP) Undergraduate Scholarships
David L. Boren Scholarship awards undergraduate scholarships for study abroad in selected countries (Study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand is excluded). Recipients will be selected on the basis of merit with consideration for: academic record, commitment to international education, language interest and aptitude, and the quality and appropriateness of the proposed program and its relevance to the National Security Education Program. This scholarship carries with it a service requirement.

Campus Application Deadline: January 16, 2009
Award amount: The maximum award is $8,000 for a summer, $10,000 for a semester, or $20,000 for a full academic year.

Donald A. Strauss Scholarship
The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation allows juniors to pursue a public service project during their senior year by providing $10,000 for educational expenses. The project may be a new undertaking or an extension of the recipient's current activities. UC Santa Cruz can nominate three students for the Strauss Award. To qualify:

  • Students must have one full year remaining until graduation
  • Students must have a GPA in the upper 1/3 of his/her class
  • Students plan to devote a significant part of your lives to public service

Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship awards graduate scholarships to help students with exceptional promise and demonstrated financial need reach their full potential through education. To be eligible, each candidate must:

  • Be a current student at an accredited US college or university with senior status by December 31, 2007, or be a recent graduate (since spring 2003)
  • Have a cumulative college grade point average of 3.5 or better
  • Plan to begin a full-time graduate degree program in the Fall 2008 (at any accredited graduate school in the US or abroad)

Campus Application Deadline: February 17, 2009
Award amount: Educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, and other required fees for the length of the approved graduate degree program, up to six years.  Maximum award amount is $50,000

IIE Fulbright Award
Established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries", Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The application cycle for the 2009-2010 U.S. Fulbright Student competition opens on May 1, 2008.

Marshall Scholarship
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. Each scholarship is held for two years.
To be eligible candidates must:

  • be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  • (by the time they take up their scholarship ie September) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or A-) on their undergraduate degree; (Exceptions will be considered only on the specific recommendation of the sponsoring college)
  • have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2006;
  • not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British university.

Campus Application Deadline:   September 1, 2009
Award amount:   University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.
